In Skill 4 of Module 1, you will draw the link between food and energy systems – creating greater understanding of the unsustainable nature of food production in the industrial growth economy.
It is the nature of our current economic system to produce and capture more and more resources. Instead of this being based on community need, it is driven by satisfying shareholder value – the ‘infinite growth’ mentality of big agri-business and our economy.
The problem with this strategy is that we are approaching a time in our lives where the finite resources available for food production may no longer be sufficient for sustaining our soon-to-be 9-billion population. Food production is at its peak – something has to change if we are to ensure the long-term survival of our species.
